Minnesota Soldiers Leave for Afghanistan
By swoods • Sep 1st, 2009 • Category: Comings & GoingsMonday at 1 p.m., 130 Minnesota soldiers began their mission to Afghanistan — at a time when top military leaders are questioning the war strategy in that country.
The top commander in Afghanistan sent his 60 day strategic review of the war in Afghanistan to central command. It reportedly outlines why the current war strategy is not working.
Back in Minnesota, 130 soldiers of the 372nd engineer brigade will get their sendoff at Fort Snelling. As a part of operation Timberwolf, soldiers will build and repair military facilities, bridges and roads. They will also provide mentorship to the afghan national army.
A NATO statement released today said U.S. General Stanley McChrystal reports the situation in Afghanistan is “serious,” but that success is achievable. He says the war demands a revised strategy, commitment and resolve.
According to the BBC, the general’s review is also expected to say that protecting the afghan people against the Taliban must be the top priority. He’ll warn villages have to be taken from the Taliban and held for good.
Nato officials say the review does not ask for more troops, an issue that will be considered separately.
The general has outlined possible solutions in his report including more engagement with Taliban, and finding them jobs. The deployment ceremony at Fort Snelling starts at 1 p.m.
